Some of Our Projects
Barbara Ann Scott Ice Trail
Toronto, ON
The Barbara Ann Scott Ice Trail is the first of its kind in the world – the first ever transcritical CO2 system for an outdoor ice trail. This is an oval-shaped, 5.0m (16.4ft)-wide path that doubles as a walking loop in the summer. The CO2 ice rink system aligns with TransformTO, Toronto’s climate action strategy that calls for GHG reduction targets, based on 1990 levels, of 30% by 2020, 65% by 2030, and net-zero by 2050 or sooner. Riverfront Park’s Numerica Skate Ribbon
Spokane, WA
Riverfront Park's Numerica Skate Ribbon offers a picturesque winter experience with its 16-foot wide, 650-foot long ice pathway accompanied by a 3,500-square-foot pond. Skaters navigate slight inclines and declines. The park includes large fire pits for both spectators and participants.

Unlocking Community Benefits: Harnessing Thermal Energy from Skating Trails
District Heating and Cooling
The Shipyards Skate Plaza in North Vancouver
In 2019, The Shipyards Commons skate plaza, part of the rejuvenated Shipyards in North Vancouver opened as the region's largest outdoor skating rink. This project aligned with North Vancouver's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, contributing to the Community-Wide Climate Action Plan.
The CO2 system that was installed has no negative impact on the environment, costs roughly half as much to operate as other options, and offers heat recovery through our unique ECO CHILL technology. This allows the city to use waste heat from the refrigeration system to heat nearby buildings via the district energy system. In keeping with the overall sustainability vision, even the Zamboni is 100% electric. This forward-thinking environmental mindset will help North Vancouver achieve its net zero targets.
Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex
Guysborough, NS
The Chedabucto Lifestyle Complex in Guysborough, Nova Scotia, features a skating trail and various facilities including a fitness center, community event space, gymnasium and an outdoor hockey rink. The facility was designed with a focus on energy efficiency and community access.
The skating trail is a 1000 ft. by 12 ft. figure 8 loop. Due to the savings achieved from this system, the facility is able to provide skating and hockey instruction to the community for free.
The complex utilizes the Thermal Force One (TF1), an all-in-one heating, cooling and refrigeration system. The TF1 includes a CO2 (0 ODP and GWP of 1) heat pump system with 150-ton capacity to provide both heating, air conditioning and refrigeration to the entire complex. The system is capable of providing 100% of the heat required to operate the facility, by recovering the waste heat emitted by the ice making process.
