SUSTAINABILITY AND ICE SPORTS
The very same arenas where our favourite NHL teams play, and the community centres where we watch our children’s skating and hockey practice, are also integral to helping North American governments reach our goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Sports can be a unifying tool among citizens worldwide for climate action. In fact, the subject of refrigerants used in ice sports has been sparking a lot of conversation since the 2022 Winter Olympics, where sustainability was one of Beijing’s top priorities. CIMCO helped to bring climate-friendly CO2 refrigeration technology to the Olympics for the first time at the National Speed Skating Oval aka the Ice Ribbon.
Product Spotlight: Thermal Force One
The all-in-one game-changer for ice rink thermal management. A net-zero ready heating, cooling, and air conditioning solution. Purpose-engineered to make your transition to net-zero as seamless as possible, this cutting-edge thermal system harnesses the most advanced refrigeration technology available, ensuring professional-grade ice, maximum efficiency, and reduced dependency on natural gas.
In a significant move towards sustainability, the Columbus Blue Jackets has become the first team in the National Hockey League (NHL) to opt for the natural refrigerant CO2 (R744) for its arena refrigeration. The outdated HFC-22 (R22) system will be replaced with CIMCO Refrigeration's (CIMCO) CO2 system in 2023, which is expected to lead to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This decision is expected to set a precedent for the rest of the NHL and the refrigeration industry as a whole, demonstrating the potential for more sustainable and environmentally responsible practices. CIMCO will be supporting the Columbus Blue Jackets in this transition towards more eco-friendly refrigeration systems.
